Gambling is entertainment with a cost.

It is never income.

It is never a way back from a loss.

And it is strictly for adults 18+.

The rules we would give a friend

  • Decide the amount before you start. Set a deposit limit while you are calm. The tool exists to bind the version of you who is not calm.
  • Only ever stake money you can afford to lose entirely. Not next month's rent, not the food shop, not borrowed money.
  • Never chase a loss. Chasing is the single most reliable way to turn a bad evening into a serious problem.
  • Set a time limit as well as a money limit. Hours disappear far faster than money does.
  • Do not gamble to escape something. Stress, grief, loneliness and boredom are all reasons to do something else.
  • Never gamble while drunk, high or exhausted. Judgement is the first thing to go.
  • Keep it social. Gambling alone, in secret, for long stretches is a warning sign in itself.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

None of these on its own means you have a problem. Several of them together is worth acting on today rather than next month.

  • Spending more than you planned, more often than you planned.
  • Gambling to win back money you have lost.
  • Borrowing, selling things, or using money set aside for something else in order to gamble.
  • Lying about how much time or money is involved, or hiding it from people close to you.
  • Feeling irritable, restless or low when you are not gambling.
  • Missing work, study, sleep or plans with people because of it.
  • Feeling relief rather than enjoyment when you gamble.
  • Being told by someone who loves you that they are worried.

If any of that sounds familiar, the helpline number above is the right next step, and it is free. You will not be judged and you will not be lectured.

The tools every UK-licensed operator must give you

Because these are conditions of a UK Gambling Commission licence, they are available at both brands we review and at every other legal UK operator. If a website will not give you these, it is not properly licensed and you should not be using it.

ToolWhat it doesHow fast
Deposit limit Caps how much you can pay in per day, week or month. A decrease applies immediately. An increase must wait, and you have to reconfirm it.
Loss limit Caps net losses over a period, which is often a truer measure than deposits alone. Immediate on the way down.
Session / time limit Ends or interrupts a session after a set period. Immediate.
Reality check An on-screen reminder of elapsed time and net position, at an interval you choose. Immediate.
Time-out A short cooling-off period at one operator, typically 24 hours to six weeks. Your account is locked. Immediate, and it cannot be lifted early.
Self-exclusion A longer block at one operator, minimum six months, with marketing removed. Immediate, and irreversible for the chosen period.
GamStop National self-exclusion. One registration blocks every UK-licensed remote operator at once. Effective within 24 hours. Cannot be cancelled early.
Marketing opt-out Stops promotional email, SMS and push messages. Must be actioned promptly, and always before a self-exclusion ends.

GamStop, in plain terms

GamStop is the free national self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. You register once, at gamstop.co.uk, using your name, date of birth, postcode and email. You choose six months, one year or five years. Every operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission to offer remote gambling is then required to prevent you from opening an account or logging in for that whole period.

Two things worth knowing before you register. First, it cannot be cancelled early — that is the feature, not a flaw. Second, it covers UK-licensed operators, so it is worth pairing with device-level blocking software if you want to close the gap entirely. Registration takes a few minutes and it is the single most effective step available to anyone who wants to stop.

Blocking software and bank blocks

  • Gambling blocking software such as Gamban, BetBlocker or Gamblock installs on your devices and blocks gambling websites at the network level.
  • Bank card gambling blocks are offered free by most UK banks and building societies. Many apply a cooling-off period before the block can be lifted. Ask your bank, or look for "gambling block" in your banking app.
  • Device parental controls and filters such as Net Nanny or Qustodio are the right tool if you are protecting a household rather than yourself.

Protecting under-18s

Gambling in Great Britain is restricted to adults aged 18 and over. Licensed operators must verify age before accepting a deposit. This website is intended for adults only. If you share a device with a child, use device-level filtering, keep payment details out of saved browser forms, and do not let anyone under 18 use your account — doing so breaches the operator's terms and can result in confiscated winnings and a closed account.

Understanding the odds

Every casino product is built with a mathematical advantage for the operator, usually described as the house edge or as return to player. Return to player is a long-run average across millions of rounds, not a promise about your session or your month. Outcomes are independent: a run of losses does not make a win "due", and a run of wins does not mean you are on a streak. Systems that claim to beat the edge do not work, and anyone selling one is taking your money with more certainty than the casino would.

Help for the people around you

Gambling harm rarely stops at one person. If you are worried about a partner, a parent, a child or a friend, GamCare and BeGambleAware both provide support specifically for affected others, and Gam-Anon runs meetings for families and friends alongside Gamblers Anonymous. You do not need the gambler's permission to get support for yourself.

Our position. We would rather lose a reader than keep one who is being harmed. If you are reading this page because you recognise yourself in it, close this website, put the phone down and call 0808 8020 133. The reviews will still be here if you decide you want them later.

Set a limit before you deposit Not after

Decide the number while you are calm.

Set it in the account menu, not in your head.

Decreases apply immediately. Increases must wait.

If a limit feels annoying, it is working.
